Learning Styles

After taking the learning styles assessment, I learned that I have a very strong preference for kinesthetic learning.  This means that I learn better by interacting and by doing hand on thins in order to remember. Before taking the assessment I was leaning more towards the idea that I am a kinesthetic learner. ON the assessment I scored an 11 on the kinesthetic column and 4s on the rest of the categories. Being a kinesthetic learner I rely on my senses such as sight, tough, taste, smell, and hearing to learn. Through out my past years at school I have always loved going on field trips, laboratories, and hands on learning. I learn more from experiencing things rather then in a classroom. For example, for AP environmental science we went to Yosemite we would go out on day hikes and bring our notebooks outside and interact with the wildlife and make observation about our surroundings. After, we would sit in small circles and relate what we just did to science and how the environment actually formed many years ago.  However, this year a lot of my classes are more lecture based so I think in order to learn better from the information I am given i need to incorporate examples in my notes and picture them and how it works. I can draw out pictures and diagrams to help me understand how processes work. Also, by attending supplement classes for certain courses I can interact with other people that might be kinesthetic learners and that way we can both put in our input and possibly come with way and examples for us to remember what we learn. This year, chemistry will be my harder class, so by me taking the extra help class I have the opportunity to work in smaller groups and work out the problems myself on the board and get input from the other students. As a learner I think by attending Humboldt State I have plenty of opportunities to get involved with hands on learning and other kinesthetic learners to help me along the way.

Introduction Letter

Dear Everyone,

Hello, my name is Corynne Nicole McMullin. I am currently 17 years old, which makes me one of the younger freshmen here at Humboldt State University. I turn 18 in less than a month on September 24th, and I couldn’t be more excited. I am from the sunny beach city of Huntington Beach, California. I try and live my life by quotes from Henry David Thoreau, Jack Johnson, and my favorite Taylor Swift. These people and their words make me the person I am today. I have become an independent, caring, determined, and outgoing person. Though I’m sure Huntington Beach and most of Sothern California has the reputation of being full of rich, stuck-up, and materialistic people, my friends and I have tried to stray away from that stereotype.

And for that reason I choose to attend Humboldt State University. My main choice for accepting this school was mainly because of the location and size. I absolutely love the outdoors and could probably spend the rest of life camping and backpacking around the world. My ultimate dream would to travel around for a few years helping out animal organizations and ultimately settle down on a farm and own horses. My family would consider me as a country girl grown up in the city. This also brings me to the size of Humboldt. I hate the stress and competition of having so many people in one area so I thought that the size here would be perfect for me. I am really excited to be here, meet new people, and active in trips and recreational sports with fellow students. I absolutely love snowboarding and will do anything in order to be able to go. I have been boarding for about 7 years now and I think I’m finally getting pretty good at it. I also enjoy swimming and field hockey. I did swim for about 8 years on a club team and field hockey for 3 throughout high school. Our team one CIF championship of Southern California undefeated! My biggest passion in life is animals and anything to do with them. I am majoring in Zoology become a veterinarian. While in high school I was always very good at sciences and math. My senior year I took AP Environmental Science and got to go to Yosemite and also got certified in Scuba Diving as we went to Catalina for a week to do so.

In high school, English class has not always been my favorite because of the fact of how much reading was involved with every assignment that was due. I am not a big fan of reading but I have found a few books that I love to read. As most girls I do love the Twilight series along with the popular Harry Potter. However, my absolute favorite of all time would be Into the Wild. The book was very inspiring as he quotes and lives by Henry Thoreau and Jack London. Next summer I plan to go visit the famous bus in Fairbanks, Alaska. Because of my determination to do a lot of things with my life I have never enjoyed doing creative writing assignments because I feel like I am making up stories about the impossible. I enjoy writing persuasive essays cause I like the idea that I am trying to prove a point and I’m determined to find the proof needed to satisfy my argument. As a student I think my strengths is that I am hardworking and I work good under pressure. My weaknesses would have to be that I am a professional at procrastinating and I have a hard time letting my grade rely in the hands of other people during group projects. I am also somewhat of a perfectionist, which at times is helps me, but can also be one of my weaknesses. One quote that I live by coming into college is by Henry David Thoreau, which says, “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.”

Sincerely,

Corynne Nicole McMullin
